Deputies and prosecutors of the Inquisition of Goa

The standard composition of each tribunal of the Portuguese Inquisition included one prosecutor (called promotor) and few counselors called deputies (deputados). However, this was not exactly the case with the Tribunal of Goa in India (active between 1560/1-1774 and 1778-1812).

Initially, this tribunal had no promotor and one of the notaries read the indictment to the accused. Only toward the end of 16th century the figure of promotor had been introduced in the Tribunal of Goa and even then that post occasionally vacated for several years. Moreover, promotor was always simultaneously a deputy. On the other hand, it occassionally happened that additional promotor was appointed to this tribunal. Another pecularity of Goan Tribunal was huge predominance of religious among the deputies.

The institution of deputy was peculiar only to the Portuguese Inquisition. Deputies were legal counselors who voted on the sentences together with inquisitors. They can be compared to consultores in the tribunals of the Spanish Inquisition but their status was much higher, equal to prosecutors and inferior only to the inquisitors. The post of deputy was often considered a “training post” for future inquisitors. Sometimes it was also a retirement post for experienced inquisitors, who for various reasons (age, health, appointment to other posts) were no longer able to be fully committed to the inquisitorial business.

The following is the list of prosecutors (promotores) and deputies (deputados) of the Tribunal of Goa (for deputies only dates of appointment are given):
