Deputies and Prosecutors of the Inquisition of Évora

Each tribunal of the Portuguese Inquisition had one prosecutor (called promotor) and few counselors called deputies (deputados).

The institution of deputy was peculiar only to the Portuguese Inquisition. Deputies were legal counselors who voted on the sentences together with inquisitors. They can be compared to consultores in the tribunals of the Spanish Inquisition but their status was much higher, equal to prosecutors and inferior only to the inquisitors. The post of deputy was often considered a “training post” for future inquisitors. Virtually all inquisitors appointed from the end of 16th century onwards had started their careers in Inquisition as deputies. Sometimes it was also a retirement post for experienced inquisitors, who for various reasons (age, health, appointment to other posts) were no longer able to be fully committed to the inquisitorial business.
